Let us acknowledge Artificial Intelligence
How AI revolves around us?
Our lives in the AI world
The term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ often evokes different reactions among people. While it transports some to a sci-fi movie scene, others find the term quite intimidating. The term was coined by a group of researchers including Allen Newell and Herbert A. Simon in the year 1956. Artificial intelligence has gone through many fluctuations since that time.
In 2020 AI applications are present in most areas of our lives even without us realizing and they have an enormous impact on our day-to-day activities. The fact that it is all around us only determines its vast scope further. Most people use it while online as well as offline.
Let’s make this read interesting by observing a regular day out of Mark’s life. Mark is a working professional who has an active social life and loves to hike.
Mark has a habit of checking his emails first thing in the morning. His Gmail account shows different categories of emails so that he can find important communications quickly. Google uses AI to make sure all the emails you receive are authentic and sorted in different categories. It claims that with the help of AI-enabled filters more than 99% of spam emails are prevented from ever getting into your inbox.
If Mark decides to reply to one of his emails, the smart replies use AI. What are smart replies, you ask? They are nothing but the tailored content that allows you to respond to emails without manually typing all the responses. Simple phrase replies like “Thanks!” or “Let’s do it”. Nudging is another feature in Gmail which is enabled by AI.
While having breakfast Mark likes to visit several of his social media platforms. Starting with Facebook; the social media giant uses AI to instantly recognize faces in a picture you uploaded and suggests tag. AI is used by Pinterest’s LENS tool. By taking a picture using this tool, AI will assist you in finding images with similar objects and suggest you sellers so you can purchase the items. All social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Snapchat, TikTok and so on generate feeds and notifications which are curated by AI. AI tracks your actions while on the portal to personalize your experience. The idea is to get you addicted to the platform.
Mark enjoys listening to music while on his way to work. It does not matter which platform you choose to listen to your favorite music, AI is making the decisions for you. AI tracks your listening habits; the same goes with the streaming services. This information is then used to make suggestions.
In the office, Mark is working on a presentation and he is using Google Search. The minute you start typing in Google’s search bar, it instantly gives you recommendations — that is AI in action. This is called Predictive searches and they are based on all the data that the company collects about you, like your age, location, family and other personal details. The Google search has got better with time because AI learns from results and adapts to meet your needs.
During his lunch break, Mark remembers to deposit a check in his bank account. The banking and financial industries heavily rely on Artificial Intelligence for things like fraud protection, customer service, investment, and more. Depositing checks through a smartphone app is a classic example of AI. Artificial intelligence is used to personalize your banking experience and also warn you against fraud in some cases even before it happens. Examples of this include sudden and large transactions or shopping in a different location; these actions are flagged based on the tracking of your day-to-day financial transactions, thus permitting AI to recognize unusual patterns in your spending habits.
Mark also orders a portable Bose speaker online for his upcoming getaway with his friends. Online retailers like Amazon or Ali Baba use AI to gather information about your buying habits and preferences. This is how they personalize your experience by suggesting related or new products.
On his way home, Mark wants to pick up dinner from a new Italian restaurant. He puts the address in Google maps to find directions. It is AI that calculates the traffic and construction in order to find the quickest route.
AI empowers many services in several industries such as healthcare, travel and navigation, home devices, gaming, and so on. Mark is just one of the many people in billions whose choices get determined by AI every day.
