Publishing a Website

This article will explore the essentials of what is needed to publish a website and the different options to get a site up live and running. It will only explore a few options that are available.

Essential aspects:

Hosting: This is space on a web server that is provided to a site that acts as a storage for files. Examples of files include HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. This is space owned by a company. There are a wide range of hosting options available including free and to more expensive business-oriented choices.

Domain: This refers to a group of computers that are organized by common rules. It is important to assign a website a particular domain name. Domain names have endings such as “.com” or “.gov.” There are several different resources wherein one can register a domain through a domain registrar.

File Transfer Protocol: This is a tool that will help migrate files from one’s computer over to the server. There are a handful of options for such programs that essentially serve the same purpose. The tool will simultaneously display one’s own files on one side and the server one is connected to on the other side. This makes it simple to transfer files over.
