The Growing Popularity of Machine Learning Technology
Machine learning (ML) is the branch of artificial intelligence (AI) and computer science that allows computers to manage tasks that have, until now, been completed by human operators. From autonomous cars to speech translation, ML is driving a sudden increase in the capabilities of AI, thereby helping software tools make sense of the complex and messy real world.
But what exactly is ML and what is making the current explosion in it possible?
What is Machine Learning (ML)?
At the machine level, ML is the process of getting a computer system to make accurate predictions based on data. These predictions could be identifying whether an animal in a photo is a cat or a dog, recognizing people crossing the road in front of an autonomous car, or whether an email is a span. Moreover, it could also be determining whether the use of the word book in a sentence relates to a hotel reservation or a paperback, or recognizing speech precisely enough to produce content for a YouTube video.
For example, an ML model has been taught how to accurately distinguish between the animals by being trained on huge volumes of data. In this case, probably a lot of images have been labeled as containing a dog or a cat.
